Abstract

The Igbo proverb about proverbs states, “proverbs are the palm oil with which words are eaten” also summarizes their effective function in verbal interaction. Proverbs could be effectively utilized in counseling in certain contexts, particularly where trusting therapeutic relationship has been established. I will discuss the function and importance of proverbs as unexplored indigenous treatment resources in communication and rapport-building endeavor with African-born clients.
