Abstract
This project is the culmination of over four years of work in the arena of competitive performance poetry. My interests in Slam poetry as an educational tool began as soon as I engaged in my first education courses at Western Michigan University. My experience as a National Poetry Slam performer, slam host and arts educator have significantly influenced my learning and have helped to shape me as a secondary education teacher of English Language Arts. I hope that this project represents not only my journey as a performer and an educator, but also some of the incredible opportunities we can utilize to get students excited about reading, writing and performing poetry.
