Abstract

During spring semester, 2003, I had the opportunity to participate one morning per week in the Mexican-American History Project. This project was collaboration among the Kalamazoo Valley Museum/Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Western Michigan University GEARUP Learning Centers, and the Bangor Public Schools. The focus of the project was creating an oral history of the lives and experiences of the Mexican-American community in southwest Michigan. In line with the overarching goals of GEARUP, one purpose of the project was to create and implement a curriculum specifically for ESL/bilingual learners that provided them with history and language arts instruction in a context that supported their English language learning.
