Abstract

This paper presents to the reader a brief discussion of the design and implementation of a limited character recognition scheme utilizing a microcomputer.

The first two sections are included to provide a general back ground of the fields of pattern and character recognition. A description of the methodologies, applications, current work, and importance of these fields is incorporated.

The third and final section gives a detailed account of the character recognition scheme developed. Choosing a scanning device, designing the interface, and developing a decision rule are all part of the design stage. The implementation stage includes the creation of the software (or computer program), tests on the scanning device, interfacing the scanner and the microcomputer, and tests on the overall system. The section concludes with a discussion of the efficiency of the recognition system.
