Abstract
Bipolar disorder is a disease that is one of the top ten leading causes of disability in the United States. Affecting approximately 1-2% of the American population, bipolar disorder is equally prevalent in both males and females (Regents of the University of Michigan, 2006; National Institute of Mental Health, 2007). This means that there are about 5.7 million American adults over the age of eighteen with bipolar disorder in any given year. Typically first diagnosed between the ages of eighteen and twenty-four, there has been an increase in the number of children diagnosed. Bipolar disorder includes a variety of types of the disorder (Regents of the University of Michigan, 2006; National Institute of Mental Health, 2007).
