Abstract
This work, which is defined to be, "A cultural history of the orchestra founded by John B. Martin in Battle Creek in 1899—its beginnings, its development, and its present status," has quite a history of its own. It was started in the fall of 1972 as a term paper for John Yzenbaard's Michigan History class at Western Michigan University, After six weeks of digging in old files at Willard Library, of going through the family scrapbooks of Roger and Olive Parkes, of talking with people who had been and were connected with the orchestra, and of visiting the Kimball House Historical Museum? the end result was the only compiled history of the orchestra.
