Abstract
Mathematics has been characterized as the deductive study of such abstractions as quanties and their consequences, namely figures (Aquinas ca. 1260), But since the emergence of abstract algebra and non-euclidean geometry in the early 19th century it has become increasingly difficult to formulate a definition to cover the whole of the rich, complex and expanding domain of mathematics. Mathematics is not so much a subject as a way of studying any subject, not so much a science as a way of life.
