Abstract
The notion of gifted underachievement seems to many to be a contradiction in terms. The myth that able learners are superior in all endeavors and capable of excelling without special programming persists. The unfortunate reality is that an untold number of gifted students go undetected, achieving at or severely below grade level, often singled out only because of failing grades or disruptive behavior. As Joanne Rand Whitmore notes in her book, Giftedness, Conflict and Underachievement, the gifted are far and away the most retarded of any educational group (Whitmore, 1980).
