Abstract

The Western Herald, the student newspaper of Western Michigan University, has been published since 1916 and most of these issues are microfilmed and located at the Western Michigan University Archives. However, until recently, there existed no searchable index for this newspaper. As many students, faculty and community members use these microfilmed issues for research an index would be incredibly helpful. Before the index was created, there was no way to search for an article about a specific topic or by a certain person. Previous research involved choosing a year and browsing through the issue for information that may or may not be found. The computerized index that is* now being created for this project will allow students and community members to gain better access to the Western Herald and decrease the amount of search time needed to locate specific information.
