Abstract

The rate of deformation of metals under stress increases as the surrounding temperature is raised. The rate should be slow so that service loads can be carried for the expected life of the unit without catastrophic failure. Control of crystal structure and alloying elements is a very important factor. Commercial availability, ease of fabrication and cost of elements must all be considered in the alloy design.
