Abstract

A simple ergonomic risk factor coding to analyze lifting tasks was developed by combining the principles and relationships from statically-modelled lifting research with the MODAPTS (MODular Arrangement of Predetermined Time Standards) coding. The risk factor coding was based on easily identifiable body landmarks, easily estimated distances, large anthropometric populations, and simplified postural recommendations.

In addition to being integrated with the previous MODAPTS coding, the risk coding prompted the development of additional MODAPTS codes. The new coding should prove useful in the prevention of lifting-related back injuries occurring in the work place. Recommendations for further research include the development of MODAPTS analysis computer software, energy expenditure coding, asymmetrical lifting risk coding, and dynamically-modelled symmetrical lifting risk coding.
