Abstract
Toyoshima Yoshio (1890-1955) is a relatively little known author today, even to Japanese audiences; however, he was an extremely productive writer working in a time of great change in the world of Japanese literature. Toyoshima was born in Fukuoka prefecture in the far southwestern island of Kyushu, Japan, and he was a very prolific novelist, translator and essayist. He studied French literature and graduated from the literature department of Tokyo University. He would later become professor emeritus as Hosei University, a private university based in Tokyo. With over thirty-five different books to his name, Toyoshima was a busy writer up until his death at the age of sixty-four from a myocardial blockage.
