Abstract

The desire and the need is as old as the dust of Babylon. Older. Translation is the original art. It is the original impulse behind every expression. To take a tree and create a symbol, a picture, a sound, a scribbling of lines which will then stand for the tree is translation. To feel an ache in the heart and put words to it is translation. Translation is the bridge between ourselves and everything else. Lived, translation can be as simple as breathing. It is only when we study the phenomenon, apply it specifically to certain types of symbols, such as words, that the act becomes problematic.
