Date of Defense
Date of Graduation
I will present a piano recital of approximately 50 minutes in length comprised of pieces by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, and Bartok. In addition to the performance, I will present program notes which will help the audience understand these pieces. Specifically, these notes will explain the musical characteristics of these composers and the ways my selected pieces exemplify these characteristics. They will describe my own experiences studying these works which includes solving musical and technical challenges. The notes will include information about the antiquated performance practices of these pieces and how this knowledge can shape a performer's interpretation in modern times. Finally, these notes will present information regarding the lives of the four composers and how their experiences are reflected by my selected pieces. The notes will address these topics in varying degrees and will be primarily determined by what will best enhance the audience's appreciation of these works.
Specifically, the program is:
F. Chopin, Etude in C major, op. 10 no. 1
W.A. Mozart, Sonata in A minor, k. 310
B. Bartok, Piano Sonata, sz. 80
J.S. Bach, Prelude and Fugue in G minor, Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1
