Abstract

Many graphic designers aspire to start their own businesses. Usually designers fall into two categories. The first category comprises of designers who are knowledgeable about business. Graphic designers who fit this category have strong marketing and promotion practices that make their business successful. There is also a second category who believe that their design credentials alone will bring clients into their new business. This thesis will examine these issues by interviewing six experienced graphic design business owners and exploring how they resolved them. The method used was a qualitative, personal interview with each designer. Transcripts of the comments were examined to identify common themes and develop a greater understanding of business practices.
