Abstract
This study will describe and analyze the impact of politics on the issue of oil pollution from tankers. But because the political issues are a consequence of the biological and technical factors, these too must be explored. Thus the paper will put the issue in some perspective by giving a brief overview of the problem and by examining the condition of the ocean environment. It will then proceed to describe and analyze the following: 1) the biological effects of oil upon marine life; 2) problems associated with oil supertankers; 3) the political issues involved; 4) some relevant international conferences and treaties which have taken place; and 5) recent pollution control devices being developed for monitoring and cleaning up oil pollution from tankers.
