Abstract

Small Claims Courts are an experiment in providing a quick means of litigating small monetary claims without the delay, expense, and procedural technicalities inherent in our formal adjudication process. The Small Claims Courts have been reason ably successful in. coping with the problems they were designed to deal with but have created other problems with their procedures and their utilization by plaintiffs. It is the purpose of this study to observe and analyze Small Claims Court operations in Kalamazoo County. More specifically, the study keys on the analysis of litigant and judicial roles to see if the problems and practices exhibited elsewhere surface in the Kalamazoo County Courts.
