Abstract
Due in large part to my studies in and practice of Western-style journalism, this thesis is written from the belief that it would be beneficial for the post-communist East European states to secure a free media. A free media, 1have been taught and have found through experience, is an important check against interests in government and the private sector that would hope to limit or manipulate the public's right and ability to know. Likewise, one with a value system such as mine views free media as an important, if not necessary, factor in maintaining an open and democratic society.
