Description

This session will examine the legacy of early Irish monasticism. Most of these monastic establishments have completely vanished, with only the stone ruins of a select few surviving. There is much that can be done, however, with surviving sources to throw light upon early monasticism in Ireland. These papers will use early historical, political, literary and hagiographical material, as well as archeological research to work towards reconstructing the life of the early Irish monk.
