CANCELED Landscape and Settlement in Bernicia

Medieval Institute, Western Michigan University

Description

North Northumberland and the Scottish Border is the location of some of the most iconic sites related to the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria, including Lindisfarne, Bamburgh Castle and the palace at Yeavering. In recent years, the increased harnessing of new techniques for looking at landscapes and settlements, such as large-scale geophysical survey, multi-spectral aerial photography and LiDAR is transforming the way in which researchers are able to reconnoitre and record the physical remains of early medieval Northern Britain. Hand-in-hand with these technical advances, there has been wider developments in the conceptual approaches to early medieval landscapes, increasingly exploring the symbolic and social aspects of space. This session brings together the results of on-going research on these important early medieval landscape and settlements and sets the agenda for new research in the region.
