Description

Led by Dot Porter and Jessie Dummer from the Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies, this pair of workshops will take a hands-on and thorough approach to methods for accessing and using open data for medieval manuscripts. In Workshop I we use the University of Pennsylvania's OPenn collections (http://openn.library.upenn.edu/) and The Digital Walters (http://thedigitalwalters.org) as resources, walking attendees through the process of bulk downloading digital images and metadata and introducing a few methods for processing the data. Workshop II will build on Workshop I, introducing additional ways to access complex open collections, including e-codices and The Getty. The workshops will be aimed at scholars who have used digital images in their work in the past, and who are interested in expanding their skills to a slightly more advanced level. No programming experience is required or expected for Workshop I, and Workshop II builds on skills learned in Workshop I.
