Abstract

This doctoral capstone experience (DCE) focused on developing comprehensive, occupational therapy (OT) -informed resources to support refugee women and young adults. The primary goal was to equip community leaders—particularly those working with Treetops Collective in Grand Rapids (GR), Michigan—with practical, culturally sensitive tools to better serve refugees and New American members. Refugee women face many barriers to occupational participation due to intersecting cultural, linguistic, and systemic challenges. While existing literature highlights general needs within refugee communities, there is a lack of tailored, practical resources to guide service providers in daily practice.

In response to this gap, resources were created with a focus on five key topics that were relevant to the leaders and members: trauma-informed care, SMART goal setting & strength-based documentation, public transportation, career preparation, and women’s health and wellness. These resources were designed to enhance existing handbooks and expand the capacity of leaders to provide meaningful, occupation-based support. This DCE resulted in step-by-step guides, training materials that will be added into future leader orientation sessions, connection to local organizations, and increased leader knowledge and confidence.

This work contributes to the field of OT by promoting occupational justice, community-based practice, and culturally responsive care. It demonstrates the distinct role OT can play in empowering marginalized populations through education, collaboration, and meaningful occupational engagement.
