Abstract

This paper explores two initiatives within the Occupational Therapy Department at Western Michigan University (WMU): the implementation of service-learning and the development of an articulation pathway for Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTAs) transitioning to the Doctorate in Occupational Therapy (OTD).

The first part emphasizes service-learning as a beneficial tool for preparing students for clinical roles while enriching communities. A needs assessment identified the need for a standardized framework for long-term community engagement, resulting in a service-learning implementation guide tailored to the department. This guide aims to enhance communication with the Office of Community Engaged Learning and increase faculty awareness of available resources. A pilot service-learning module was successfully established in two courses, enabling first-year OTD students to engage with community partners.

The second part focuses on the articulation pathway designed to facilitate OTA students' transition to the OTD program. This initiative streamlines the curriculum by recognizing the education and experience of OTAs, reducing redundancy and enhancing flexibility. The project culminated in an articulation pathway that aligns with Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) standards. Together, these topics develop a culture of social responsibility and community engagement among students while enhancing patient care and interdisciplinary collaboration in the occupational therapy field.
