Abstract

In Jazz it is traditional to have an ensemble made up of harmonic instruments; instruments that can play chords and provide constant harmonic material such as a piano, guitar or upright bass. In “The Art of The Duo”, Sam Pilnick and Steven Perry will explore the possibilities of performing compositions from the Jazz repertoire with two non-chordal instruments: the saxophone and the drum set. Throughout “The Art of the Duo”, Sam and Steven will perform two standard compositions, Have You Met Miss Jones by Irving Berlin and Bessie’s Blues by John Coltrane, outlining form, melody and harmonic sensibility without a chordal instrument.
