Abstract

This project attempts to link the developmental needs of adolescents with a curriculum that will serve these needs. As public schools grow and expand the focus of their curricula, they should continue to incorporate material that stimulates and challenges students. Educators believe that the inclusion of poetry units for second language learners requires thinking skills that exceed their students' abilities. Others think that the genre does not represent a practical need for students at the early stages of language acquisition. This thesis questions both of these assumptions. Poetry in a foreign language lends itself to both an adolescent's cognitive and moral development and it reinforces basic language skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
