Abstract

This study is a comparative analysis of the effects that globalization has on literacy policies and practices in the U.S. Midwest and in Senegal. In this study policies of literacy are examined, and a literature review is used to develop a definition of literacy and globalization. The theoretical framework of ethnomethodology guided the work in this study, as ethnographic interviews and participatory observation were the tools used to verify conclusions reached in analysis of literature. The study concludes with an analysis of literacy practices in Senegal and in the U.S. Midwest and how these practices related to involvements within a global economy.
