Abstract
My honors thesis was presented in the form of my senior clarinet recital. My recital was performed on Saturday, March 29th at 6:00 pm. The program of music consisted of the following: Introduction et Rondo Opus 72 by Charles-Marie Widor for Clarinet and Piano, Phoenix Rising by Stacy Garrop for solo Clarinet/Bass Clarinet, Zwei Concerstücke Opus 114, Number 2 by Felix Mendelssohn for Clarinet, Basset Horn, and Piano, and then the first and third movements from Concerto for Clarinet K.622 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for Clarinet and Piano. This recital contains music from different centuries such as the 18th, 19th, and 21st centuries as well as representing different countries such as France, Germany, and America. When compiling the repertoire for my recital, I knew I wanted to show off all of the skills that I have learned during my time here. One of the things I focused on was showing off what the clarinet can do. One way I accomplished this was utilizing the auxiliary clarinets. On my program, I performed on Bb Clarinet, A Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, as well as the Basset Horn. I feel as though performing on multiple instruments for my senior recital encompasses a lot of what I did during my undergraduate studies and I am proud to represent that through my performance. In addition, I wanted to have a little bit of variety in instrumentation on my recital. I performed two solos with piano accompaniment, a piece for two clarinetists with piano accompaniment, and an unaccompanied clarinet solo. I knew I wanted to have at least one chamber piece on my recital for some variety. During my last semester I was doing chamber music in the form of a duet with one of my friends. We each performed a different piece on each other’s recitals as a way to show off all of the work we did that semester. Another thing that was important to me in planning my senior recital was making sure I loved each and every piece on my program. While pieces like the Mozart Concerto are standards in the clarinet repertoire that everyone performs numerous times and is asked for on every single audition, I loved getting to learn this piece as well as the other three pieces on my recital. Outside of learning the notes and rehearsing with my accompanist, I spent lots of time listening to different recordings and analyzing the pieces to see what the composer intended and how I could convey that to my audience.
