Abstract
This thesis investigates the many benefits that children’s books provide for children. The purpose of this thesis was to create lesson plans for teachers to use that specifically incorporate children’s books into their teaching. This thesis begins with my rationale for this topic as my rationale pulled together both my career and personal connections to some of my life experiences. Then this rationale is followed by a research paper that looks into the many benefits that children’s books provide. With this research and background information, I was able to gather a list of children's books that exemplified many of the benefits mentioned in my research. A mock family communication letter follows, explaining to families the purpose and benefits of including children’s books in lesson planning that teachers could send out at the beginning of the school year. This thesis then ends with a series of 10 lesson plans, each one tied to a specific children’s book from the list that exemplified the benefits found in my research. These 10 lesson plans range in both topics from core content areas, holidays, social emotional learning and so much more. Teachers provide a great resource to ensure that children reap all the benefits children’s books provide by specifically including books into their lesson planning. When books are used in lesson planning, it augments children’s learning experience by enhancing essential literacy skills, including the 5 pillars of literacy, stimulating emotional and social development, promoting cultural sensitivity and inclusivity, supporting cross curricular learning and various learning styles, facilitating class discussion, and making learning more relevant and relatable. This thesis allows for a simple set of lesson plans for teachers to follow, with research backing it up, in order to allow students to reap the benefits of children’s books.
