Abstract

This study explores the role of natural medicine in Costa Rican culture, while focusing on its historical, cultural, and clinical significance. With a literature review, ethnobotanical research, and a study abroad experience, this paper highlights the integration of natural, herbal medicine into modern healthcare. Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity, with its varied microclimates and abundant medicinal plants, forms a strong foundation for traditional herbal medicine. Indigenous groups such as the BriBri and Cabécar contributed significantly to this legacy, which has evolved through interactions with European and Afro-Caribbean populations.

Research emphasizes the cultural importance of herbal medicine within the “Pura Vida” lifestyle, which values simplicity, nature, and holistic health. Herbal remedies like soursop for cancer, rosemary for respiratory health, and turmeric for inflammation demonstrate the practical applications of these traditions. Clinically, there is exploration on the impact of plant-derived compounds such as alkaloids, terpenes, and flavonoids in preventing and treating conditions like cardiovascular disease, inflammation, and mental health disorders. These natural compounds are highlighted for their affordability, accessibility, and minimal side effects, making them essential in both rural and urban settings.

This study connects Costa Rica’s commitment to conservation with the preservation of its herbal practices, showing how sustainable healthcare and environmental preservation are interlinked. With a life expectancy higher than the global average and recognition as one of the world’s Blue Zones, Costa Rica provides a model of how traditional medicine contributes to public health. Through immersive experiences in botanical gardens, conservation projects, and cultural institutions, this research explores the value of herbal medicine in fostering individual and community wellness.

Ultimately, the findings reveal the importance of integrating traditional and modern medical approaches. By preserving and advancing herbal medicine practices, Costa Rica not only maintains its cultural tradition but also offers insights into sustainable, holistic healthcare solutions for the community. This research invites a deeper appreciation of how natural medicine can shape health systems and encourage a sense of harmony between humans and the environment.
