Abstract

The Environmental Education Act, which took effect October, 1970, called for cooperative efforts to inform the public about the environment (Warfield 1981). The extent to which this goal is being met is questionable. This study surveyed 447 students in grades six, eight, nine, and eleven to determine their level of understanding of selected questions relating to ecology and the effects of the human population on the environment. This thesis implies that it would be beneficial if science education in the future included more direction on how the human population affects the concepts being learned.
