Abstract

The initial objective of our research was to develop a preparative method for optically active tropinone derivatives as key intermediates for organic synthesis. As the project got undsr way, difficulties with the literature procedure were encountered and a new project objective was delineated; it entailed the synthesis of 2,4,8-trimethyl-8-azabicyclo[3.2.1]oct-6-en-3-one (7), Scheme 3. The following sections will discuss our efforts toward the synthesis of intermediate 7 using a variation of Hoffmann's procedure.4 A special laboratory technique was developed to improve the preparation of this valuable synthetic precursor.
