Men spilling from Imam Mosque into the Naghsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan for Friday Prayer. The square is oriented north-south, per old Persian ideology. The mosque is oriented to Mecca, per Islamic tradition, and at an angle to the Square. Thus, the mosque and square combine pre-Islamic and Islamic traditions.
