Compare with Image 469. Islamic shrine in the village of Kariak in 2006, following renovation by the government. The Islamic regime had a complicated relationship with shrines. On one hand, they are considered pre-Islamic, and therefore un-Islamic. On the other hand, the government encouraged any kind of Islamic religious devotion and sometimes invested in renovating or maintaining shrines.
