CONGRESS CANCELED Piers Plowman's Influences: Genre, Authors, and Beyond

Medieval Institute, Western Michigan University

Description

Much recent scholarship on Piers Plowman has focused on the poem’s debts to particular genres (e.g., romance, pastoralia, popular verse) and authors (e.g., Chaucer, Machaut). But much of this work focuses on a single source influencing Langland, published as standalone, discrete articles. We propose this session in order to synthesize the field’s recent thinking on Langland’s influences: Our hope is that such a session will facilitate a discussion of the multiple, interlocking influences across Langland’s poetry and will help us better contextualize the way Langland used the texts he encountered.
