Paper Title 1

Using Astrolabes and Astronomical Tables to Compute Lunar and Planetary Positions: A Hands-on Workshop

Presenter 1 Name

Kristine Larsen

Start Date

8-5-2020 9:30 PM

Session Location

Valley 3 Eldridge 309

Description

The workshop will begin with an overview of the basic parts of the astrolabe, how to use the astrolabe to convert the solar calendar to astrological dates, and (very briefly) salient points of planetary and lunar motion. Attendees will then be led step-by step through calculations using an astronomical table (ephemeris data) and astrolabe to calculate the positions of the moon and naked eye planets in the night sky for a given date. Free cardboard astrolabe and instruction sheet for the first 75 participants to take home. Kristine Larsen
