CONGRESS CANCELED Arthurian Wastelands (A Roundtable)

Medieval Institute, Western Michigan University

Description

IAS-NAB roundtable on 'Arthurian Wastelands': the wasteland is a long-established and well-known trope in Arthurian literature, appearing in texts as diverse as the first extant grail quest – Chrétien de Troyes’ twelfth-century _Conte du graal_ – to T. S. Eliot’s famous 1922 poem _The Waste Land_. The waste land is also a recurring trope of Arthurian adaptations in modern novels, comics, and films. Accordingly this roundtable will appeal to a diverse range of scholars and scholarly approaches, bringing together a spectrum of Arthurian scholars from several of the major medieval linguistic and literary traditions whilst also being open to modern rewritings of those traditions. Previous IAS-NAB roundtables have all been highly successful and exceptionally well attended. The breadth of the wastelands topic and participants means that the session is by design inclusive. [K.S. Whetter, 26.ix.19]
