General Education and Specialization: Are They Meeting the Needs of Society?

Abstract

Panel 2 presented at the Association for General and Liberal Studies' Annual Meeting, which was held at Southern Illinois University, October 21^st through 23^rd, 1971.

The needs of society will best be met when the needs of all its members are being met.

Do general education and specialized education meet the needs of contemporary society? It is easier to evaluate specialized education. As to general education, we must first ask ourselves pertinent questions, such as "What are we actually expecting general and liberal education to do?"
