Ben J. Atchison, Ph.D., OTR/L, FAOTA
Ben J. Atchison, Ph.D., OTR/L, FAOTA is professor and chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy at Western Michigan University. Dr. Atchison’s clinical and teaching specialties focus on pediatric occupational therapy. He is the cofounder of the Southwest Michigan Children's Trauma Assessment Center, a nationally recognized model for comprehensive assessment of complex trauma and development of sustained trauma-informed communities. He has numerous publications in refereed journals and chapters in textbooks related to the impact of trauma on sensory processing, and is coeditor of Atchison and Dirette: Conditions in Occupational Therapy: Effect on Occupational Performance. He has served as coinvestigator on several SAMHSA grants, which have focused on both training school personnel and creating trauma-sensitive classrooms, resulting in the development of a curriculum for classroom use, "The School Intervention Project." He is also an associate member of the Brain Research and Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Lab (BRAIN) at Western Michigan University.
