Abstract
Cottonlandia is a novel-in-stories set in and near the rural community of Money, Mississippi, where 14 year-old Emmett Till was murdered by two local white men in 1955. The stories never directly address the murder, but everything in the north Mississippi landscape---the wild animals, the swollen, yellow rivers, the water-saturated fields, the poisonous snakes---reflects the weight of grief, loss, disconnectedness, and fear that mark the characters' lives.
