Abstract
One of the greatest paradoxes in history is the formation and growth of American political parties in the inhospitable environment of the English tradition we inherited. The unlimited land and opportunities for agriculture and commerce, coupled with the burning ideas of the Age of Enlightenment, produced a fertile seed bed in America for the growth, of political parties.
