Abstract

Individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) typically experience a disruption to their involvement in meaningful daily activities, or occupational participation, which can harm their quality of life. Occupational therapists are equipped to confront this obstacle, often through the use of assistive technology (AT). Various AT devices can be utilized to aid in performing daily occupations and have been shown as an effective way to compensate for functional limitations. With the improved ability to participate in activities, AT can help to restore quality of life among the SCI population. Even with this knowledge, significant barriers to accessing AT still exist, particularly a lack of understanding of available AT and how they can be used. This capstone project sought to address the need for improved awareness of AT among individuals with SCI through the development of accessible resources, including a webpage and application. Usage of the webpage is continually increasing and community members have reported its usefulness. This is anticipated for the application, as well, once it is released for public use. Occupational therapists will also benefit from these resources to further their own knowledge and refer clients/patients to in practice to enhance understanding of AT.
