Abstract

This capstone project involved the development and implementation of a trauma-informed care training program for college-aged counselors within Kesem, a nonprofit organization supporting children affected by a parent or caregiver’s cancer. The project addressed gaps in existing counselor training related to recognizing and responding to trauma in real time. The literature identified increased risk for psychosocial challenges in this population, including anxiety, depression, as well as the importance of peer support, safe environments, and developmentally appropriate communication.

The training program included different modules on trauma, grief, and child development, as well as interactive role-play scenarios tailored to different age groups (6-18) Kesem works with. Additional resources were created to address counselor burnout and promote self-regulation to provide the best experience for campers. Training materials were compiled into an accessible online platform to support sustainability and consistency across chapters.

Using pre- and post-training surveys indicated increased counselor confidence and preparedness in responding to campers’ emotional needs. Counselors reported that interactive components, enhanced engagement during training and communication skills with a trauma informed approach. This project demonstrates the importance of integrating trauma-informed principles into counselor training to improve support for children experiencing the effects of a parent’s or guardian’s cancer.
