Abstract

The purpose of my doctoral capstone experience (DCE) was to gain knowledge about the unique role that occupational therapy (OT) plays in equine-assisted therapy at the Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center, with an emphasis on Therapeutic Riding. Equine-assisted therapy, including hippotherapy and therapeutic riding, is an emerging area of occupational therapy practice that promotes physical, cognitive, emotional, and social well-being through structured interactions with horses. Despite growing evidence supporting the therapeutic benefits of equine-assisted interventions, confusion remains regarding the distinctions between hippotherapy and therapeutic riding, highlighting the need for increased education and advocacy within the field. In addition, there is a gap in the use of occupation-based, evidence-informed resources to guide interventions in this setting. Many objectives were created and successfully completed throughout the experience, including the development of educational materials to increase awareness of hippotherapy and therapeutic riding, the creation and implementation of occupation-based interventions within various TR programs, and the design of an obstacle course booklet to enhance skill development and client engagement for individuals with disabilities. The resources developed during this experience provide sustainable tools for future program development, staff education, and client support at the Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center. This project highlights the role of occupational therapy in serving individuals with emotional, cognitive, and physical deficits within the fields of Hippotherapy and Therapeutic Riding.
