Abstract
A Doctoral Capstone Experience (DCE) and project was completed at the conclusion of Western Michigan University’s Occupational Therapy program with the goal of implementing an occupation-focused educational program dedicated toward topics relevant for community-dwelling older adults. The capstone project took place at the Clinton Township Senior Adult Life Center (CTSC) under the mentorship of Ericka Tringali, CPRP. The Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) focus area of this project was program development. The program consisted of three educational classes focusing on topics including Basic Activities of Daily Living (BADLs), creating healthy habits and routines, and fall prevention and energy conservation strategies, specifically designed for the older adult population. Objectives were created to guide the DCE which included assessing the site’s current programming, developing and implementing educational classes, and creating a resource binder for members to reference. Pre- and post-evaluations were completed by members who engaged in the live presentation to gather feedback on content relevance to participants and to analyze for changes to the resource binder and recommendations for future programming. The project will be sustained through an educational resource binder that the CTSC members can access while at the center, along with a recorded video of each presentation on YouTube and shown on Clinton Township local cable television.
