Wagner and Shaw: Rheingold Motifs in Major Barbara
Abstract
In lieu of an abstract, the first paragraph of the essay follows:
In a recent, intriguing article "The Playwright as Perfect Wagnerite: Motifs from the Music Dramas in the Theatre of Bernard Shaw" (Comparative Drama, 13, No. 3 [Fall 1979], 187-207), Arthur Ganz discusses the Ring element in Major Barbara, particularly those motifs from Die Walküre and Siegfried which find their way into Act III of Shaw's play. Ganz's reading is both astute and convicting; I wish to add only that Act II of Major Barbara is also not without Ring echoes - echoes of Das Rheingold.
