Setting the Motivational Stage for Science Career Circumscription? Interactive Effects of Stereotype Threat and Parental Occupation

Abstract

Gottfredson’s (1981) theory of circumscription and compromise suggests that gender stereotyping leads women to eliminate certain male-dominated fields as viable career options. We tested this theory by examining the interactive effect of stereotype threat and father occupation type (STEM vs. non-STEM) on women’s motivation for physics.
