Abstract

This review examines five studies that focus on how cultural, race-related constructs influence African American clients’ counselor racial preference. A deeper understanding of the relationship between cultural, race-related constructs and African American clients’ counselor racial preference will help the mental health profession decide on what further research is needed to find a solution to the problem of the reluctance of African Americans to utilize professional mental health services.
