Abstract

This paper develops and supports the hypothesis that Hatha Yoga is a valuable therapeutic tool and could be successfully and beneficially incorporated into psychotherapy. The paper reviews current published literature concerning yoga and its therapeutic potential. The goals and concepts of psychotherapy and behavioral medicine are discussed to provide a framework into which yoga may be placed. Relevant background is given about the techniques and philosophy of Hatha Yoga to provide the reader with a working concept of the discipline. This is followed by a breakdown of the main components of Hatha Yoga and the specific mental and physical health benefits of each as related to psychotherapy.
