Abstract
Substance use disorders are major contributors to ill health in populations worldwide. Incessant use of psychoactive substances over a prolonged period can either contribute directly to factors that cause illnesses or exacerbate preexisting disease conditions. The most prevalent forms of substance use disorders, among all global populations, are related to misuse of alcohol and commonly result in disorders of abuse or dependence. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) it is estimated that some 76.3 million people suffer from alcohol use disorders worldwide (WHO, 2009).
