Abstract
In 1054, feuding words between the Western Papacy and the Eastern Patriarch were transformed into action, forcing the formal division of the Church into that of the East and that of the West. Though one might mistakenly regard this event as another episode in the saga of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, this split shook the very foundations of the medieval world.
